Door Wallpaper Ideas: Statement Murals and Measuring Tips

A white door in a room setting decorated with various humorous and spooky warning signs, including a red stop sign, a zombie intrusion sign, a biohazard sign, a dinosaur warning sign, and a shark zone sign.

A door mural can introduce artwork where there is little clear wall space. It can also make a bedroom entrance or a home office door part of the room’s design. The challenge is choosing an image that works on a tall, narrow surface, with a handle interrupting one side.

Before choosing a door covering, look at both the artwork and the physical door. A design you love still needs a suitable surface and a workable crop.

Statement door or a door that blends into the wall?

There are two different ways to use wallpaper on a door. A statement mural treats the door as its own picture. A continuous wall-and-door design aims to disguise the opening by carrying the artwork across both surfaces.

Our collection is a starting point for the statement-door approach. If you want a continuous scene across a wall and door, discuss the layout with us before ordering. Buying two separate prints does not establish that their scale and edges will align.

Choose a theme that suits the room beyond it

Our Door Covering collection includes gaming, space, floral and foliage themes. A gaming design can connect a bedroom door with a desk setup. Flowers or trailing greenery offer another direction when you want the entrance to complement plants, textiles or botanical artwork.

Decide whether the door should be a focal point or part of a quieter scheme. Keep the surrounding wall simple if you want the artwork to stand out. If the room already has a large mural, choose a door design that complements it rather than introducing a competing scene.

Measure the area you intend to cover

Measure the door face itself, keeping the surrounding frame separate. Take width and height measurements in more than one place and note any differences. Record the units clearly when checking product dimensions or discussing an order.

Also note whether you want to cover one face or both. Check the selected product’s size and ordering instructions before purchasing; do not assume every door covering uses the same dimensions or configuration as a full-wall mural.

Plan around the handle, lock and edges

A handle can interrupt an important part of the image. Before approving the artwork, mark roughly where the handle and any lock, letter plate or glazed section sit. Keep faces, lettering and other important features away from those positions where possible.

If you are adapting existing wall mural artwork, first preview a narrow crop. A landscape that looks balanced across a wall may lose its main subject when reduced to a door-shaped composition. Ask for advice if the important details cannot fit comfortably.

Check the surface before choosing a material

A flat door and a panelled door present different installation challenges. Raised mouldings, deep grooves, texture and damaged finishes all need to be considered. A product described as peel and stick should not be assumed suitable for every painted or coated surface.

Before ordering, tell us what the door is made from, how it is finished and whether it has panels or glazing. Send a photograph if you are unsure. Check material suitability and preparation instructions before applying a covering, and ask before making changes to a rented property.

Can any wall mural become a door mural?

Some designs adapt more naturally than others. Tall foliage, scattered motifs or a subject positioned within a narrow area may offer more cropping flexibility than a wide scene. Review the proposed door crop before committing; the fact that an image can be resized does not mean its composition will still work.

Make a practical shortlist

Choose two or three designs from the door mural collection, then compare their composition against your measurements and handle position. A design that fits the door naturally is a better starting point than one that needs its main subject cropped away.
